Since its first appearance in writing in the 12th century, the Grail has haunted the Western imagination, inspiring artists from Chrétien de Troyes to Richard Wagner, from Malory to Dan Brown. This day explored some of the different ways the Grail has been understood, drawing analogies between the medieval Grail and Eastern Orthodox understandings of the role of icons, and hoping to catch glimpses of the Grail’s essential symbolism: transfiguration and return to the Edenic state of total communion with God.
Speaker: Dr Simon Wilson.
