Persephone & the Eleusinian Mysteries (18 May 2013)

Frances Eley, lecturer in Classics and Archaeology for the Open University, led this study day on the myth of the descent of Persephone into the Underworld, her reign as Queen there and her subsequent re-ascent, which formed the basis of the Mysteries at Eleusis. The day looked at the uses of the Persephone myth by ancient authors and artists, while exploring its deeper significance at Eleusis.
