The Idea of the Holy - Dr Simon Wilson (2 Feb 2013)

The talk began with a discussion of Otto's work The Idea of the Holy, and then moved on to Origen of Alexandria, who held that we could experience not only the resurrection to be hoped for after death, but also a partial 'resurrection' here and now: body and soul renewed by the spirit, possessing true wisdom, true love and true freedom.  In The Idea of the Holy: An Inquiry into the Non-rational Factor in the Idea of the Divine and its Relation to the Rational, Otto explores the non-rational mystery behind the religious experience -"the numinous", which every individual has the potential to perceive.  The experience is one of awesome mystery before the 'Wholly Other'.
